SUMMERGE YOURSELF

 

In the summer of 2017, the Monterey Bay Aquarium wanted to lure the land-loving citizens of the Bay Area into the depths. We created the Summerge Yourself summer program, which included a website, a traveling photo booth, and ocean-themed bar trivia nights and outdoor family movie nights.

 

THE PHOTO BOOTH

 

The traveling photo booth gave people a chance to take the plunge and tango with a giant tentacle. People could choose to get a printed photograph or an animated GIF of their adventure, which they could share via their social networks using the #MBASummergeYourself hashtag.

SUMMERGE YOURSELF SITE

 

The Summerge Yourself site served as the digital hub for the summer program. Event calendars informed visitors about when and where the Aquarium's summer events were coming ashore. The site pulled in social content from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and also featured fun factoids about ocean animals, which furthered the Aquarium's mission of continuing ocean education.

BAIT BALL BALLET EXPERIENCE

 

The traveling Bait Ball Ballet experience brought one of the ocean's most amazing spectacles onto dry land—the sardine bait ball. By interacting with the touchscreen, people could guide hundreds of synchronized sardines with their fingertips, and watch them form pre-selected shapes—all of which was set to the beat of a user-selected music track. After the scaly show was over, users could share their experience via their social channels and email themselves a video of their personalized Bait Ball Ballet.
